ACCESSIBILITY POLICY

The Whitby Historical Society is pleased to offer accessible provisions for your visit to the Lynde House Museum and Warren General Store. It is our goal that guests of all abilities have the best possible experience while at the Museum. All tours are accompanied by staff or trained volunteers.

A defibrillator is located inside the Warren General Store near the entrance. First aid supplies are available, however in the case of any major incident or emergency, it is the policy of the museum to immediately dial 911.

If you have an accessibility request not mentioned below, contact our Museum Manager, Lisa Johnson, in advance at 905-665-3131, and we will do our best to make the necessary arrangements to meet your needs.

PARKING: There is a free parking lot behind the Museum, entered from Burns Street. Guests can be dropped off right in front of the Warren General Store to shorten walking distances.

WASHROOMS: There is a gender-neutral, wheelchair accessible washroom with a push automatic door, hand rails and emergency buttons, located inside the Warren General Store. There is a baby change station available in the washroom.

WHEELCHAIR ACCESS: The Warren General Store and the first floor of Lynde House Museum are fully wheelchair accessible. Both buildings have wheelchair accessible walkways leading to the entrances. There are two staircases leading to the upper floor at the Lynde House which must be navigated by walking. Staircases have handrails on both sides. Video tours are available for those who cannot access the second floor of the Museum.

SEATING: Tour guides will identify chairs that guests may use while visiting the Museum. There are functional seating areas available on both floors. Designated rest area seating will be provided at all outdoor events.

SERVICE ANIMALS: Please note that, although pets are not allowed in the Museum, trained service and therapy animals are welcome. Animals must be kept on a leash at all times.

HEARING IMPAIRED: Printed guidebooks are available upon request. Please notify us when booking your tour.

VISUALLY IMPAIRED: Please notify us when booking your tour if you require adaptations for visual impairment. Lynde House offers a selection of hands-on artifacts which visitors can enjoy.

SENSORY REDUCED TOURS: Sensory reduced tours are available upon request. Please give us advanced notice of any specific requirements.

ADAPTED TOURS: We are always willing to adapt tour information to our guests’ needs. Please let us know of any special requirements at the beginning of your tour and we will do our best to accommodate them.

TOURS FOR VISITORS with DEMENTIA/ALZHEIMER’S: We offer adapted tours for visitors experiencing dementia/Alzheimer’s, and their companions. These tours use facilitated discussions to foster socialization, mental alertness, and memory.

ATTENDANTS: Attendants supporting persons with disabilities receive free admission to ticketed events.
